What is Yaniv?

Yaniv is a fast-paced Israeli card game, usually played with a standard 52-card deck. It's a game of strategy, luck and knowing when to strike — the goal is to keep your hand value as low as possible, and to be brave enough to call "Yaniv!" at the right moment.

It's brilliant for groups of 2–8 players and a game can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on how many rounds are played.

For larger groups of 6–8 players, there's nothing stopping you using two decks of cards shuffled together to keep the game flowing!

How To Play
1

Each player is dealt 5 cards. The remaining cards form a draw pile, with one card flipped face-up to start a discard pile.

2

Then discard one or more cards. You can discard a single card, a set of cards with the same value, or a run of consecutive cards of the same suit. A Joker can be used within a consecutive run to act as the missing card — for example, 3, Joker, 5 of spades is a valid run.

3

Draw one card from either the draw pile or the discard pile. If the previous player discarded a consecutive run, you may only pick up the top or bottom card of that run — never a card from the middle. For example, if someone discarded the 3, 4, 5 and 6 of spades, you could pick up the 3 or the 6, but not the 4 or 5.

4

If your hand adds up to 7 or below, you have the option to call "Yaniv!" instead of drawing — but you don't have to. You might choose to wait and lower your score further before calling. If you do call Yaniv, everyone else reveals their hand.

5

If your hand has the lowest value, you win the round and everyone else adds their hand total to their running score. If someone else ties or beats your score, you add the value of your hand plus a 20 point penalty to your running score.

6

Now repeat steps 2–5, over and over, until only one player remains — they're the winner!

Scoring & Winning

Each round, every player except the winner adds the value of their cards to their running total. Once a player's score reaches the knock-out threshold (usually 200 points), they're out of the game.

The last player remaining wins!

💡 Some versions use trigger points — if your total lands exactly on a trigger point, you get 50 points knocked off. Yanivly lets you set your own trigger points in the game setup.
